Things I've learned over the past week or so
1. AK preflop RAISEY DAISEY
2. Amarok taught me how to do some easy math for the turn/river. Ex. I have two diamonds in my hand. Flop is two more. I have nine possible outs if no one else has a diamond so 9x4 on the turn = ~36% chance, and lets say I get the diamond so 8x2 = ~16% chance on the river of getting a diamond. That's not completely accurate but close enough to give me an idea of where I stand.
3. Twentytwo says read books and forums, talk to lots of people. He's given me some helpful links like
http://www.pr0crast.com/2+2.NL.Anthology.v1.htm which basically points to all the useful stuff on 2+2 forums. I have Thursday and Friday off, so he said I can maybe sweat him on one of those days.
4. Patience. This magazine I'm reading says I need to be ok with making money very slowly. When I first started I'd play whatever hands I thought looked ok just b/c folding is boring. Now I just play a couple of tables at once and take it easy. I've gotten more accustomed to recognizing strong starter hands. Unfortunately, I still find myself falling to people's bluffs and folding when I have the better hand. That'll improve with experience.
5. Position is important. Small blind, big blind, under the gun, middle position, cut off, on the button. Some hands you would play differently depending on your position and how everyone else played. Ex. If I have a pair of tens and I'm under the gun, I wouldn't raise (pre-flop). I have no idea if anyone else has a strong hand. If I have the same hand on the button and everyone else has just called, I can probably assume they have weak hands and raise.
6. Bankroll management. This is something I see mentioned every where. It seems like it's common sense, but I imagine a lot of people do get caught up in the game. I don't picture this being a problem for me since at this point I'm not exactly rich, but should the day ever come where I have a few thousand dollars... Basically if I have $20k, I don't want to do any more than a $1k buy in at a table. If I double up and get to $21k I should call it a night. This sort of goes hand-in-hand with the patience thing.
I can't really think of anything else to add right now, but these are the more important things I've picked up on lately. I was going to make a poker blog on the site 22 uses, but it looks like it costs money to post there. F that.
